Missing Cigarette

My mom has a cropped version of this photo which is just of Clarence's face. Recently, when I found this full version, it gave new context for me. I don't really know the story behind the four other guys, but my mom assumes they were work friends. What I find kind of interesting and fascinating is that Clarence's left hand appears to be holding a cigarette. And yet, when you zoom in on it, it just seems to be a shadow there. Which leaves me wondering, did somebody remove it from this print? That seems like it would have involved some finagling on somebody's part, since this was pre-Photoshop. A cover-up, perhaps?

Knowing Clarence
And I keep thinking that maybe one day I'll peel back that one final layer and I'll be able to see clearly and say with some authority that this, this is Clarence ... but the bottom line is I will never know this man. I will die and he will remain a mystery to me. . . .

I refer you to the 'Uncle Red' shot. That could also be a cigarette. In fact the kung fu grip appears to be a theme or x-file photoshopping. Also, 2nd from left - Pres. Truman?.
